With great sadness Jerry Tannhauser of Tuolumne and TCARES became a silent key from an apparent heart attack. Jerry was our club president from 2018 to 2019. I know many of us here at CARES would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family. In our deepest grief god does send a sign of his love to all of us.

An Enjoyable Day For Bike Riders

image_pdfimage_print

The Calaveras Amateur Radio Society was delegated with the responsibility of monitoring the almost 150 cyclists who participated in the Calaveras Ride And Walk 4 Art. The cyclists had a choice of three treks to choose from a 25 mile route, a 45 mile and a challenging 75 mile trek. Last year the beginning of the Covid pandemic had cancelled the event in 2020. Cyclists exhibited pent up excitement this year to hit the trails again. Our club president Steve Airola would like to extend a job well done, to those radio operators who monitored the cyclists routes.

Antenna Build Project

image_pdfimage_print
It was great to meet the folks in West Point and our County Emergency Coordinator Sam Hernandez who guided us in making our 450 ohm Ladder Line Slim Jim Antenna (pictured above) it fits conveniently in my tactical pack. Pictured in an upright storage position the emergency antenna shows good performance on two meters and 70cm. Plus it was fun to build! Also an open stub J-pole was also available as a project.

WB6TOU-13 Balloon Mission Has Ended

image_pdfimage_print

Launched on January 10th 2021 the Balloon took a slightly more Southerly course bypassing Europe. Some of the new countries it flew over were Northern Mexico, Spain, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Beijing China. The Balloon orbited the Earth two and one half times. Tracking of the Balloon with its APRS/WSPR transmitter were very consistent, as long as it was in sun light that kept the solar panels charging the Capacitors which kept it pinging its position.

February 8th was the last transmission received before sunset as it was traveling over Kabul Afghanistan. Altitude data and speed were nominal what failure occurred during the night is unknown. The Balloon did not report in the following day.

Thank You David Voit WB6TOU and Congratulations on reaching the goal of  completing multiple orbits, and improvements in tracking. This is not the end a WB6TOU-14 is in the future.
