The Storied Past of our Veterans

From MARS station at Sub Base Pearl Harbor; KH6SP

Running RTTY welfare traffic from servicemen in RVN and Guam. Cut paper tape then relayed to CONUS when propagation was good. This was a photo taken by the Sub Base newspaper, we didn’t really use the receiver shown, there was a Collins S-Line a few feet to the right.

I volunteered at the station while I was a VIP driver at the CINPAC motor-pool, but when I made ETn3, I was transferred to the Sub Base and put in charge of the station.

The photo doesn’t hint at the structure, it was a concrete bunker with 4′ thick walls and 8′ thick ceiling. It was constructed in January 1942 to protect some 12KV switchgear on the ground floor. It no longer exists, evidently removed sometime in the 90’s. I’ll bet that wasn’t easy!
