With a 1,000 cyclist registered and 100 miles to provide radio support both the Calaveras Amateur Radio Club as well as the Tahoe Amateur Radio Club joined forces to make the route for the cyclist as safe as possible.

Arnold’s 4th Of July Parade started off with the Firecracker Mile with many of the Participants being students of Hazel Fischer Elementary School. CARS members Mark N6ARP and Mike KB6USJ helped with accurate timing and course information via radio to the officials at the race table. For our good work we were presented with these nifty T-shirts, come join us next year and you can get yours too!
In efforts to aide communications during the Death Ride cycling event, a team of CARS technicians were busy preparing cables, radios etc.

Usually a Field Day in the Foothills could mean hot and dry weather conditions, but this past June offered up mild temperatures and pleasant sunshine. A contingent of CARS members headed up to Avery to get on the air for Field Day, below are photos of the group in action.

The annual 13 Colonies special event will begin on July 1 at 1300 UTC and conclude on July 8 at 0400 UTC. Stations representing the original 13 British colonies, plus two bonus stations, will be on the air with 1 × 1 call signs. The event sponsor stresses that participants do not need to work all 13 colony stations to obtain a certificate and do not need to work the two bonus stations for a clean sweep. All HF bands will be in play, with the exception of 60 meters, and simplex on 2 and 6 meters is encouraged. All modes of operation may be represented.

Bonus station WM3PEN will be in Philadelphia (the call sign commemorates the Pennsylvania colony’s founder, William Penn). The other bonus station will be GB13COL in the UK.

Field Day is ham radio’s open house. Every June, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio’s science, skill and service to our communities and our nation. It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular event in ham radio.
To contact as many stations as possible on the 160-, 80-, 40-, 20-,15- and 10-Meter HF bands, as well as all bands 50 MHz and above, and to learn to operate in abnormal situations in less than optimal conditions.
Field Day is open to all amateurs in the areas covered by the ARRL/RAC Field Organizations and countries within IARU Region 2. DX stations residing in other regions may be contacted for credit, but are not eligible to submit entries.
