FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
The Solar Eclipse Is One Month Away!
Learn How You Can Participate in Two HamSCI Roundtable Events

The last total solar eclipse across North America for twenty years will occur on Monday, April 8th. Hams across North America are asked to participate in learning more about how the ionosphere functions by getting on the air to help scientists in a series of ionospheric experiments.

Connect with HamSCI members and curious hams on Wednesday, March 27 at 8PM (Eastern) / 5PM (Pacific), or that same day at 10PM (Eastern) / 7PM  (Pacific) for a Zoom presentation on HamSCI’s Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science (FoEIS).  The presenters will take your questions during the 30-minute presentations.

The link to these presentations is here: https://scranton.zoom.us/j/286316405?pwd=QWdwMlFPbDlYeXg5ZDg1dmYzeFdCUT09#success

The program will start by covering HamSCI’s basis and purpose, quickly moving into why we are conducting experiments, how hams and SWLS can participate, and what we hope to learn from the event.  Along the way, we will discuss why the science behind the events is important to users of the high frequency radio spectrum – including amateur radio operators!

⦁ …and more!
There is no need to pre-register, create an account or log into any site. Simply follow this link at the date and times above to be taken to a Zoom meeting room, hosted by HamSCI:  HamSCI FoEIS Roundtable Zoom Link
Join us on March 27th!! Get on the air April 8th!!

HamSCI serves as a means for fostering collaboration between professional researchers and amateur radio operators. It assists in developing and maintaining standards and agreements between all people and organizations involved. Its goals are to advance scientific research and understanding through amateur radio activities and encourage the development of new technologies to support this research.

Death Ride Pt 2

13 Colonies Special Event

The annual 13 Colonies special event will begin on July 1 at 1300 UTC and conclude on July 8 at 0400 UTC. Stations representing the original 13 British colonies, plus two bonus stations, will be on the air with 1 × 1 call signs. The event sponsor stresses that participants do not need to work all 13 colony stations to obtain a certificate and do not need to work the two bonus stations for a clean sweep. All HF bands will be in play, with the exception of 60 meters, and simplex on 2 and 6 meters is encouraged. All modes of operation may be represented.

  • This year will mark the 12th occurrence of the event. Look for:
  • K2A, New York
  • K2B, Virginia
  • K2C, Rhode Island
  • K2D, Connecticut
  • K2E, Delaware
  • K2F, Maryland
  • K2G, Georgia
  • K2H, Massachusetts
  • K2I, New Jersey
  • K2J, North Carolina
  • K2K, New Hampshire
  • K2L, South Carolina
  • K2M, Pennsylvania.

Bonus station WM3PEN will be in Philadelphia (the call sign commemorates the Pennsylvania colony’s founder, William Penn). The other bonus station will be GB13COL in the UK.

Mr. Frogs Wild Ride

If their are more photos from this event that members would like to share please email to houston12@arrl.net we would love to see them.

On and off showers was the WX last Saturday, but it did not dampen the spirits of the cycling participants nor the volunteers of the radio club. How can you go wrong with an abnormally wet season that has made the hill sides a deep green and the streams and brooks flowing with abundant water, which has not been observed in years. Its a season for the frogs, an A+ was given out to the radio club volunteers from the event organizer for their efforts in providing information on progress of the cyclist and safety. Once the final reports are in we will have more to say about Mr. Frogs Wild Ride. As you must know it a tradition around these parts.

Annual Armed Forces Day Crossband Test

The US Department of Defense (DoD) will host this year’s Armed Forces Day (AFD) Crossband Test on May 13, 2023. This annual event is open to all licensed amateur radio operators and will not impact any public or private communications. For more than 50 years, military and amateur stations have taken part in this event.

The AFD Crossband Test is a unique opportunity to test two-way communications between military communicators and radio stations in the Amateur Radio Service (ARS), as authorized in 47 CFR 97.111. These tests provide opportunities and challenges for radio operators to demonstrate individual technical skills in a tightly controlled exercise scenario.

Military stations will transmit on selected frequencies and will announce the specific ARS frequencies monitored. All of the times are Zulu (Z), and all frequencies are Upper Side Band (USB) unless otherwise noted. The frequencies used for the test will not stray outside the confines of the exercise.

A complete list of frequencies, time periods, QSL cards, and other information can be found at DoD MARS – Armed Forces Day.

AFD is a time of honor. It will be celebrated on Saturday, May 20, 2023. The first AFD was celebrated with parades, open houses, receptions, and air shows. Today, many events and activities take place and may include multi-service military displays in areas open to the public, various educational activities that teach children about the armed forces, and large parades with local celebrations.

The longest running AFD parade in the United States is held in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Certain types of music will be played at AFD 2023 events to show respect to those in the armed forces who died for their country.
