*** Happy 2020 New Year ***

73 from MARK, N6IV

I have been proud to serve as your Public Information Office (PIO) during my 2017-2019 term. It is time to turn over the reins to a younger more energetic sole, Mike, KB6USJ, who will inform you, entertain you, and keep you on your toes. Wishing all the CARS members a safe and happy Xmas season. May the New Year bring us better band conditions, more dx, more local QSOs, and happiness for all, (oh yes, add world peace). 73 for now and see you at the next Club Meeting, January 9th . MARK , N6IV

CARS EM-COMM TRAILER

Call for volunteers on CARS em-comm trailer.

Chuck, W6AJW, our CARS president, recently took me on a tour of one of the club’s current endeavors, the em-comm trailer.  The trailer was donated to the club and is located at Chuck’s QTH in San Andreas. For the most part the trailer has been cleared inside allowing for the construction of radio operating positions and equipment shelving. One vhf/uhf port on the roof has been established and HF is planned for.
Presently a butternut vertical is inside awaiting it’s light of day opportunity along with vhf/uhf antennas. A generator mount is present at the trailer’s rear. Chuck reports that he has all the tools needed for the trailer completion and that any assistance to the project will be welcomed

Amateur Radio Balloon 10/27

Dave Voit, WB6TOU, a fellow CARS club member, is involved with ebarc and has sent us the following opportunity to contact a repeater on a near-space balloon.
Info on the launch:
Date: October 27thTime: Either 11:00 or noon
Radio: Wouxon KG-UV8D with input on 145.56 MHz (162.2 Hz tone) and an output on 445.525 MHz.  Last time it transmitted at 0.5 W.  A handheld should work fine.

The call sign will be W6MRR-11 (this was changed from KJ6DZB-11)
The altitude reached should be 100,000 feet or higher.  The line of sight range is 1.23*sqrt(altitude in feet), answer in miles.  At 100,000 feet the range is 389 miles.  At 50,000 feet the range is about 275 miles.

The balloon will be tracked on APRS.fi and will show the balloon icon.  The sponsoring group is East Bay Amateur Radio Club at http://ebarc.org/index.html.  The total flight time is likely to be 2:45 or so.  The beacon should appear when the balloon reaches a couple hundred feet.   The APRS  display will show altitude and you should be able to estimate when you can hit the repeater.
Since launch time is not certain, watch APRS.fi for the icon to expect to worky the repeater. If you are far away, do the math for line of sight.

Contact Dave for more info at: dvoit1944@gmail.com

Good luck to Dave, the balloon, and everyone involved. Should prove fun and or challenging. 73. Mark, n6iv

Emergency Traffic Control

Here is a communication from our fellow CARS member Chad Cossey, KM6MG. He is also
the Emergency Services Coordinator at Calaveras County OEM San Andreas. In that capacity he has forwarded a website that deals with traffic control especially during emergency situations. Many of us engage in emergency services as ham operators and sometime are called on to fulfill other rolls other than working the radio. Here is your opportunity to learn about handling real traffic.
